Betsy and the Emperor

When Napoleon Bonaparte is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and exiled to the remote island of St. Helena, he is placed under the supervision of the English Balcombe family. Fourteen-year-old Betsy Balcombe is initially terrified of the infamous, larger-than-life Emperor, but she quickly becomes intrigued by him. As the two spend time together, Betsy discovers a softer, more human side of Napoleon that few people ever get to see. She eventually hatches a daring plot to help him escape his captivity. Though her plan ultimately falls apart, the attempt results in a fascinating and deeply unique friendship between the young girl and the fallen Emperor.
