The Glovemaker

Set in 1649 England following the execution of Charles I, the story follows a fiercely independent 39-year-old glover’s assistant named Rachel Lockyer. When a dead infant is found hidden behind a slaughterhouse, Rachel is arrested under a harsh new law that presumes any unwed mother who conceals her child’s death is guilty of murder. The plot follows her public trial and her secret affair with a married political agitator.
