Book Smugglers of Timbuktu

This captivating non-fiction work intertwines two distinct yet deeply connected narratives spanning different eras. First, it explores the historical obsession of Western explorers who braved deadly African terrains to uncover the mythical, golden city of Timbuktu. Second, it fast-forwards to contemporary times, detailing a modern-day operation where a network of local librarians and archivists risked their lives to smuggle hundreds of thousands of ancient, invaluable Islamic manuscripts out of the city. They did this to protect their heritage from total annihilation by al-Qaeda-linked militants occupying the region. Ultimately, the book is a thrilling testament to cultural survival and human bravery in the face of violent extremism.
