Jane Eyre’s Sisters

In this insightful book, Jody Gentian Bower challenges the traditional, male-dominated archetype of the “hero’s journey”—popularized by scholars like Joseph Campbell—arguing that it fails to capture the true essence of a woman’s path to maturity and independence. Instead of tracking a conquest-driven quest that concludes with external validation, Bower introduces the aletis, or the wandering heroine. By examining a mix of real-world histories and female characters in literature—ranging from Charlotte Brontë’s iconic Jane Eyre to modern protagonists—she maps out a distinctively female path toward self-actualization, deep authenticity, and creative power.
