Cryers Hill

Set in a small English village, this novel connects two timelines through the experiences of two boys growing up thirty-five years apart. The first narrative takes place in 1934 and follows a teenager named Walter, who witnesses his girlfriend submerge into a woodland pond, never to return. The second thread shifts to 1969, focusing on a young boy named Sean who struggles with a complex phonetic reading curriculum at school. When Sean happens upon a collection of old letters in the same woods, he stumbles into a disturbing local mystery involving a schoolgirl’s murder. As Sean tries to decode the text, the book beautifully unravels a shared landscape of dark secrets, hidden trauma, and overlapping memories.
