This Life: Why Mortality Makes Us Free

In this profound philosophical exploration, Martin Hägglund challenges traditional religious ideals of eternity and an afterlife. He argues that the finite nature of our lives—our mortality—is actually what gives our actions, relationships, and values their ultimate meaning. Because our time is strictly limited, our choices matter deeply, forcing us to care for one another and the world we share. Extending this concept from personal spirituality into the political sphere, Hägglund outlines a secular vision of freedom. He calls for a structural societal shift toward democratically sharing time, liberating individuals from exploitative economic systems so they can decide how to spend the only precious life they will ever have.
