It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet

Set against the scenic backdrop of 1930s Yorkshire, this heartwarming memoir continues the semi-autobiographical journey of James Herriot, a young and freshly qualified veterinary surgeon. As he navigates the steep learning curve of rural practice, Herriot shares a collection of amusing and chaotic episodes involving stubborn local farmers, eccentric animal patients, his unpredictable boss Siegfried, and Siegfried’s mischievous brother Tristan. Balancing the comedy of farmyard mishaps with his gentle pursuit of a beautiful local farmer’s daughter named Helen, the book captures the joys, trials, and enduring warmth of rural veterinary life.
